Urban decay was the inspiration for the visual concept of the set. Because this was a black box theatre, I wanted to create a space that felt disorganized and unmaintained. Purgatory is a place where people are left behind, so the set is comprised of things that were once significant and meaningful to people but where then left behind. The audience was arranged to be in all four corners of the theatre. The risers for the audience were off-set to make even the seating seem more chaotic. Items used to dress the set were meant to seem like they were once possessions thought to have importance and answers but then deemed useless in purgatory. Things like newspapers, books, bibles, rosaries, pill bottles, clocks, phones, alcohol bottles, ect. were strewn throughout the theatre.
